Claude has an official export of everything in your account. It is the right tool for a complete snapshot, but you get data, not documents. Here is how to request it, and how to turn it into files you can read.
Request the export
- At claude.ai, click your name or initials in the bottom left and open Settings.
- Go to Privacy and click Export data.
- Wait for the email from Anthropic and download the ZIP from its link before it expires.
Team and Enterprise plans: exports are usually handled by the organisation’s owners, not by each member.
What is inside the ZIP
conversations.json: every chat, each with its name, dates and a list of messages. Messages carry who sent them (humanorassistant), their text and their content blocks.projects.jsonand project documents, if you use Projects.users.json: your account details.
Each type of data is one file, so two years of chats end up in one large JSON file. You can search it, but it is awkward, and no app opens it as a list of conversations.
Turn it into readable files
The goal is one Markdown file per chat, named by date and title, with the turns labelled. Two ways to get there:
Import the ZIP into Chat to Markdown (Pro)
- Install Chat to Markdown, choose the folder for your chats, turn on Claude and press Start saving.
- Open its Settings and choose Import an export.
- Choose the ZIP from Claude. Every conversation in it is written as a Markdown file into the
Claudefolder of the folder you picked, the same format the automatic sync uses.
The import reads the ZIP on your computer. It is not uploaded anywhere. The files match what the sync writes, so chats you continue later update the same files instead of creating duplicates.
Or skip the export entirely
If you just want your chats as files, you don’t need the export. Install Chat to Markdown, turn on Claude and stay signed in to claude.ai in the same browser. It reads your chats with your own session and saves them as files. Free saves 10 chats, counted across all the AI services you save from, and keeps them up to date. Pro goes back to the very first one.
Keep it up to date
An export is frozen on the day you request it. Anything you discuss with Claude afterwards is missing until you export again.
A synced folder doesn’t have that gap. New and changed chats are written on the schedule you pick (every 3 hours unless you change it), and as soon as you leave a chat. A continued chat updates its file instead of adding a copy, and the version before is kept. Chats you delete in Claude stay in it, marked as deleted, and with Pro it holds every chat you’ve ever had, so the folder becomes your full record.
